THE PISTOLA JOURNAL

A week at Masseria Pistola

The Canale di Pirro is a good place to discover that a week does not need to be filled. From Masseria Pistola, the view runs across a valley of vineyards and farmland. There are towns and a coast within reach, but there is also the simple pleasure of staying where you are: a shaded courtyard, a swim, a long lunch and enough space for everyone to find their own pace.

A house for coming together

Pistola is rented as a private home for one group, with eleven en suite bedrooms for up to 22 guests. Some rooms sit beneath the farmhouse roof, others under trulli and pagliaro roofs. The two-bedroom Garden Cottage offers a separate sitting room and small kitchen, a shaded terrace and its own plunge pool.

There is space to meet again when the day draws people in different directions. The Long Room, with its barrel vault, seats 22 for dinner. Courtyards and terraces offer alternatives for meals outside, and the sitting room is a place to settle when the evening turns cool.

Mornings in the garden

A morning might begin with a swim in the main pool, set in the private garden, before breakfast is prepared. Later, some of the group might take to the tennis court while others follow paths through the estate’s vineyards, olive groves and woodland. The landscape is part of the pleasure, whether seen on foot or simply from a chair in the shade.

Guests can also visit Giardini Pistola, the separate sister garden designed by Urquhart & Hunt. Its terraced gardens and farm shop welcome visitors; they are distinct from the Masseria’s private gardens. Ask the team about opening times and guest access, which may vary with the season.

The table

Food provides a natural shape to a day at Pistola. Breakfast is prepared each morning, and the private chef cooks Puglian dishes with seasonal ingredients, including produce from the kitchen garden. Menus can be discussed around the group’s tastes, whether the occasion calls for an easy lunch or a longer dinner together.

The house team also helps with reservations, transport and experiences. Food, drinks and optional activities are charged separately, so it is sensible to discuss the details and service schedule when booking.

A little further afield

A week gives time for both the house and the region. Alberobello offers an extraordinary concentration of trulli, while Martina Franca and the towns of the Valle d’Itria invite slower exploration. The Adriatic coast offers a different day out, with time for the sea and a meal in a coastal town.

There is no need to fit every place into one itinerary. A morning out can be followed by an afternoon at the pool; an ambitious day of exploring can be balanced by a quiet one at home. That is one of the advantages of staying in a house together: the holiday can contain several different kinds of day.

Pistola is normally booked for a Sunday-to-Sunday week. Share your dates, party and preferences with the bookings team, who can confirm availability and the arrangements for your stay.
